Schalke Wins Germany’s Second Division a Day After Getting Promoted Back to the Bundesliga
Schalke finished with 67 points and can no longer be caught with two rounds left, after Paderborn lost 5-1 at Elversberg.
On Sunday, Schalke became the German Bundesliga second division champion, securing the title one day after clinching promotion back to the top flight following a three-year absence.
Saturday's 1-0 victory against Fortuna Duesseldorf at the Arena in Gelsenkirchen secured promotion back to the German Bundesliga after a three-year absence.
Elversberg moved into second place following a 5-1 victory over Paderborn, while Hannover drew 3-3 with Preu, shifting the competitive landscape behind Schalke.
With two rounds remaining, Schalke leads the table with 67 points, while fifth-place Darmstadt can no longer reach the top four necessary for promotion.
Automatic promotion goes to the top two teams, while the third-placed team faces a two-leg playoff against the third-bottom Bundesliga team to determine final promotion.
The climb was already established yesterday – now it is clear that Schalke 04 will leave the second league as a champion. Elversberg is also taking course in the first league, Hannover has a late opponent.
