Scented Cleaners Linked to Rapid Formation of Airborne Nanoparticles

Researchers found mopping, spraying and wiping with scented cleaners generated billions or trillions of ultrafine particles, raising indoor air quality concerns.

Summary by Air Quality News
Scented cleaning products can create invisible air pollution indoors, with nanoparticles forming at levels comparable to, or greater than, those experienced near busy roads, new research suggests. A research team led by Brandon Boor, an assistant professor of civil and construction engineering at Purdue University, found that fragrances in both…

The cleaning products, both conventional ones and those made with essential oils of vegetable origin, can release aromatic compounds that react in the interior environment and favor the formation of nanoparticles. These ultrafine particles can remain suspended in the air and reach the lungs when inhaled.

Cleaning products remove germs and dirt, but researchers have discovered that their aromatic compounds react in the air, forming particles that can travel deep into the lungs if inhaled. Simple changes can reduce a person's exposure while cleaning. They will present their findings at the ACS Fall 2026 meeting.
