Satellite imagery captures race to recover 170-foot SpaceX Starship in the Indian Ocean
Satellite images show tugboats trying to tow the 170-foot prototype after its July test flight left it floating instead of sinking.
Satellite images from Monday show SpaceX vessels Skimmer Tide and Normand Ranger attempting to recover the Starship prototype, Ship 40, which remains floating in the Indian Ocean after its recent test flight.
Launched on July 24, the 13th test flight of the integrated Starship system resulted in what SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot called the vehicle's 'softest' splashdown yet, allowing the prototype to remain airtight and buoyant rather than sinking.
SpaceX engineers prioritized gathering data on the vehicle's hexagonal ceramic heat shield, designed to protect Starship from temperatures reached during atmospheric reentry at speeds topping 17,500 miles per hour.
Although the company did not initially expect to recover Ship 40, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed on July 28 that the recovery effort would proceed, marking a shift in the vehicle's testing evaluation.
Future missions may attempt landing the upper spacecraft on dry land, though SpaceX still faces significant engineering challenges, including developing methods to refuel the vehicle while it remains in orbit.
