Eagles Running Back Saquon Barkley Says NFL Told Him to Divest Equity Stake in Polymarket
Barkley said he had to divest after the league told players prediction markets count as gambling, unlike rules in other major sports.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley divested his equity stake in Polymarket this week after the NFL confirmed league rules prohibit players from investing in or endorsing prediction markets.
Barkley previously held equity in the company but confirmed to Front Office Sports he exited because "I am not allowed to be in that," noting regulations were not explicit when he first invested.
While the NFL maintains strict bans, the NBA permits player investments in prediction markets provided they avoid betting on their own games, and the NHL and Major League Soccer maintain commercial partnerships with these platforms.
This regulatory exit coincides with a difficult stretch for the Eagles, as Barkley ran for just 62 yards during Monday's 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, extending Philadelphia's losing streak to five games.
Critics describe the NFL's position as a "do as we say, not as we proft from" attitude, noting that while the league treats prediction markets like gambling companies, team owners may hold minority stakes in such ventures.
