Exact Dates 40 Santander Banks in UK Will Close in April and May
Santander said 291 jobs are at risk as customers move online and community bankers will replace closing branches.
Santander will shut 40 UK branches by the end of May, continuing a nationwide reduction in physical locations following the closure of 44 sites announced at the beginning of the year.
Attributing the decision to a growing number of customers opting for online services, the Spanish banking giant noted that 96% of transactions are now conducted through digital channels.
Closures will commence by the end of April, with more following in May, while Santander confirmed that 291 jobs are at risk due to the latest round of cuts.
To ensure continued service access, Santander has promised to provide "community bankers" through Santander Local outlets or shared banking hubs, ensuring customers in impacted areas retain essential services.
Less than 12 months after Santander revealed in March 2025 that it would shut 95 branches impacting 750 staff members, this latest round continues the bank's ongoing restructuring programme.
