SanDisk Says Goodbye to WD Blue and Black SSDs, Hello to New “Optimus” Drives

Sandisk will unify WD Blue and Black SSDs under the Optimus brand, maintaining model roles with segmented lines for creators, gamers, and professionals.

  • SanDisk said it will rebrand Western Digital's WD Blue and WD Black SSDs as the SanDisk Optimus family, beginning immediately, with products expected to reach select retailers in the first half of 2026.
  • Western Digital spun off SanDisk in March to handle NAND flash memory and SSD products, while WD refocused on hard drives, reversing a decade-earlier integration.
  • Segmented into three lines, the Optimus family includes elite Optimus GX Pro with SN8100 and SN850X rebadges, gaming Optimus GX with SN7100 and 2230 GX 7100M, and creator-focused Optimus with SN5100.
  • Technically, Sandisk says existing performance tiers will remain unchanged with QLC and TLC flash types, PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 interfaces, and DRAM cache or Host Memory Buffer memory.
  • Visually, the drives adopt red, black and white hues, undoing a decade-long integration while WD retains a remaining stake in SanDisk.
