Sand completes second 99-county town hall tour of gubernatorial campaign
Sand urged supporters to keep momentum as he closed a 99-county campaign tour before the 2026 election, drawing more than 1,800 attendees.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, Iowa Auditor Rob Sand completed his second 99-county gubernatorial tour, holding the final stop at Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines where more than 1,800 people attended.
Sand, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, called for supporters to bring "divided government once again" to Iowa, which currently operates under a Republican trifecta alongside Governor Kim Reynolds and GOP majorities in both chambers.
Taking questions from attendees, Sand advocated for a 5% increase to K-12 funding and outlined plans to address the $1.4 billion state budget deficit, while fielding inquiries from two registered Republicans.
Polls and political forecasters show Sand leading Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn heading into the Nov. 3, 2026 election, though Sand cautioned supporters against complacency.
Meanwhile, the Legislature reconvened Friday to pass tax incentives for a $15 billion steel mill project planned for Lee County, one month before the general election.
