Hurricane Lowell Leaves 19 Cats Homeless in Hawaii
The shelter said a second transport of 20 cats is planned, bringing the total relocated from Kaua‘i to 39 as recovery continues.
On Tuesday, 19 cats from Kaua arrived at San Diego International Airport, where San Diego Humane Society staff transported them to North County locations in Escondido and Oceanside.
Hurricane Lowell struck the islands of Kaua on Sept. 7, 2026, as one of the strongest storms in 34 years, damaging 67 homes and prompting the relocation.
By transferring pets already awaiting adoption in Kaua, the partnership frees up critical kennel space for displaced and injured family pets impacted by the storm, SDHS stated.
The cats are settling in well with 11 in Escondido and eight in Oceanside, while a second transport of 20 Hawaiian felines is scheduled to arrive in coming weeks, bringing the total to 39.
Once ready for adoption, the cats will be available on the shelter's website and placed with new families on a first-come, first-served basis.
