San Antonio police chief announces retirement after 2 decades
William McManus, San Antonio’s longest-serving police chief, will retire after nearly 20 years leading the department and plans to stay through September 2026 during a planned transition.
On Friday, Jan. 16, the City of San Antonio announced that San Antonio Police Chief William McManus will retire later this year and remain chief through September 2026.
After nearly two decades leading SAPD, William McManus, San Antonio Police Chief, is stepping down this year to align with the end of the current budget year for transition planning.
City Manager Erik Walsh praised Chief McManus, saying, 'Chief McManus is an exceptional leader whose incredible experience and steady leadership have strengthened public safety across San Antonio and set an example for other cities nationwide,' Walsh said.
No successor was named Friday, and City Manager Erik Walsh will oversee hiring, with any appointment requiring San Antonio City Council approval; William McManus will present the 2025 crime statistics to the City Council Public Safety Committee on Tuesday.
As the city's longest-serving police chief, William McManus, San Antonio Police Chief, led through policy and technology reforms, survived two votes of no confidence, and returned after a 2014 CPS Energy hiatus amid scrutiny including the Melissa Perez case.
