SAG-AFTRA Condemns AI 'Actress' Tilly Norwood and Warns Producers on Synthetic Performers
SAG-AFTRA and top actors warn AI actress Tilly Norwood threatens human performers’ livelihoods amid agency interest in signing the synthetic talent.
On Saturday, Eline Van der Velden, CEO of Particle6 and founder of Xicoia, unveiled Tilly Norwood, AI-generated character and Xicoia's first creation, at the Zurich Summit as agents circle for representation.
SAG-AFTRA responded that Norwood is a synthetic character trained on performers’ work, with president Fran Drescher calling non-consensual AI use 'a form of cultural theft' after last year’s contract gains.
Industry observers note that studios may see AI performers as cost-effective and logistically useful, according to Van der Velden, who said studios are quietly advancing AI projects and that further announcements will come in the next few months.
Several well-known actors reacted by urging a boycott of agencies working with Norwood, while British acting union Equity dismissed her capabilities and SAG-AFTRA leadership vowed stronger member protections.
Talks with the Association of Talent Agents will address digital replica rules as advocates back the NO FAKES Act, California disclosure bills, and SAG-AFTRA explores GDPR-style data protections.
