News Bulletin Cuts 'Canary in the Coal Mine' for Regional Journalism
WIN will pre-record weeknight bulletins and replace weekend local news with Sydney-based Nine News, cutting regional coverage by half.
WIN Network announced sweeping changes this week following its acquisition of NBN News, axing weekend bulletins and reducing weeknight coverage to a 30-minute pre-recorded format starting June 27.
The changes follow WIN's finalization of a deal to acquire NBN Television from Nine Entertainment Co, ending decades where the broadcaster maintained an hour-long, live bulletin from Newcastle since the early 1970s.
Despite NBN News Sunday being the highest-rated bulletin in the Hunter and northern NSW for decades, management will assess resources over the next three weeks as weeknight bulletins shift to 5:30pm.
Wallsend MP Sonia Horney described the decision as a "blow to regional news, local communities and democracy itself," while television industry commentator Rob McKnight warned job losses were inevitable.
Former Seven Network executive Laurie Patton attributed the cuts to a 2017 Coalition decision lifting the 75 per cent national audience reach rule, which enabled city networks to acquire regional stations.
