Saab, FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces launch LUUV

The demonstrator will help develop software, sensors and autonomous functions for future underwater systems, Saab said.

  • On Oct 16, 2026, Saab, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration , and the Swedish Armed Forces launched a Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle demonstrator less than one year after the contract award.
  • Close collaboration between industry and government authorities reduced the time from identifying operational needs to testing new capabilities, enabled by a software-centric approach and integration of Autonomous Ocean Core.
  • Mats Wicksell, head of Saab's Naval business area, said the vehicle "can contribute to increased endurance, enhanced situational awareness and strengthened underwater capabilities." The demonstrator supports future evaluations alongside naval platforms like submarines.
  • FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces will use the demonstrator as a basis for decisions regarding future acquisition and operational use of autonomous underwater systems, building on Saab's earlier investments.
  • Future project phases will focus on developing more advanced capabilities, with results supporting continued development of software, sensors, and autonomous functions for future product evolution.
