German railways are set to begin a months-long renovation of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line tonight, extending travel times on the 300-kilometer route between the two cities, which normally takes less than two hours, by 45 minutes, the German news agency dpa reported.
As of today, the Hamburg–Berlin railway line is fully closed for nine months. There are massive restrictions on rail travellers. "More than 80,000 kilometres are to be driven daily with replacement buses", reports reporter Gerrit Schröder.
As of 1 August, the connection between Berlin and Hamburg will be completely closed for nine months. Further important routes will follow. A nuisance for commuters, a fiasco for freight transport – especially for Austrian exporters.
The Hamburg-Berlin railway is still free - but the replacement bus service has been running since the early morning.
