S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stocks move higher
Energy and technology shares led the decline as investors weighed trade uncertainty and higher tariff risks, while U.S. indexes posted gains.
Canada's main stock index fell in late-morning trading Friday, weighed down by energy and technology sector losses, while U.S. markets climbed higher.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said Monday that unpredictable U.S. trade policy heightened uncertainty for businesses, with new tariffs affecting nearly $28 billion of Canadian goods.
Statistics Canada reported Thursday that retail sales fell 0.7 per cent to $73.7 billion in July, though preliminary estimates for August point to a 1.3 per cent gain.
Adam Ludwick, director of asset allocation at NEI Investments, said markets view an October interest rate hike as a "coin flip" amid stubborn inflation and Middle East conflict.
Statistics Canada will release July GDP figures next Tuesday, with Ludwick warning that slowing growth paired with persistent inflation creates a difficult economic environment.
