AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition Review: Tons of Cache for Tons of Dollars
The flagship posts the biggest production gains in our benchmarks, but AMD’s second V-Cache tile adds only modest gaming improvement and higher power use.
- AMD launched the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition flagship processor, featuring two 3D V-Cache chiplets and 192 MB of total L3 cache. The chip tops production benchmarks but delivers only marginal gaming gains versus the standard Ryzen 9 9950X3D.
- The 9950X3D2-DE builds on 9000-series architecture by adding a second SRAM tile, boosting total system cache to 208 MB. This design increases thermal design power to 200 W, enabling higher sustained boost clocks than the single V-Cache variant.
- Testing reveals a 5.8 percent uplift over the 9950X3D and an 11.5 percent uplift over Intel's 24-core Core Ultra 7 270K in multi-core workloads. The processor compiled LLVM source code about 6.6 percent faster than the cheaper 9950X3D.
- Priced at $899 MSRP, the flagship costs $200 more than the 9950X3D at $699. AMD claims the chip "delivers 90 percent the performance in production workloads and/or matches our flagship processor in gaming at a $200-$400 discount."
- With gaming performance on par with existing X3D parts, the 9950X3D2-DE targets enthusiasts rather than value-conscious buyers. Its high cost positions the processor as a halo product encroaching on entry-level Threadripper and Xeon-W territory.
