Eye on Africa - Fierce Fighting in DR Congo as M23 Advances Towards Uvira
Rebel advances after heavy bombardment from Burundi-led coalition have displaced thousands and killed 53 civilians, with Uvira likely to become the next conflict hotspot, officials say.
- This past week, AFC/M23 rebels pushed south toward Uvira, entering Sange and Luberizi after seizing Luvungi and Kamanyola, with fighters a few kilometres north of Uvira as the offensive advanced.
- Following heavy bombardment of Kamanyola, including strikes by the Burundian army from Cibitoke region, rebels counterattacked after neutralising coalition artillery shelling.
- Twirwaneho said three helicopters bombed villages of Mikalati, Mikenke, Gahwera, Gisoke and Rugezi, and the rebels claimed 53 civilians died in Kamanyola strikes.
- Witnesses said that Congolese soldiers arrived in Uvira overnight Monday, and shops were looted at dawn, amid over 30,000 fleeing to Burundi in one week, according to UN and Burundian sources.
- Regional leaders warn the clashes risk escalating into a broader regional war, as the US-brokered peace deal signed last Thursday in Washington is undermined by renewed violence.
