The journalist, identified as Yuki Imai, 34, was held after Russian state media said he was gathering defense-related information for Japanese intelligence.
On Tuesday, the Federal Security Service arrested a Japanese journalist for the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper on Sakhalin Island, accusing him of gathering information on Russia's defense capabilities.
Russia regards Japan as an "unfriendly" country after Tokyo joined Western sanctions regarding the war in Ukraine; tensions escalated following Russian President Vladimir Putin's August visit to the Kuril Islands.
Russian state TV footage showed the journalist handcuffed by three FSB servicemen; authorities subsequently flew the suspect to Moscow, where a court authorized his custody for nearly two months.
Japan's embassy in Moscow did not answer calls regarding the detention, reflecting strained relations between Tokyo and Moscow that lack a formal World War Two peace treaty due to unresolved territorial disputes.
This arrest echoes the 2023 detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who received a 16-year espionage sentence before his release in an East-West prisoner swap in August 2024.
