Russia Threatens to Target U.S. Missile Sites in Norway
Russia says the launcher can fire Tomahawk missiles and that deployment sites and command centers in Norway may become targets, officials said.
- On Monday, Russia condemned the U.S. deployment of an advanced missile system to Norway, saying the move dealt a further blow to prospects for U.S.-Russia talks on strategic nuclear stability.
- The Russian Foreign Ministry identified the system as using Mk-41 launchers, which can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of reaching a substantial part of European Russia, including Moscow.
- Russia will pay "particular attention" to these deployment sites as potential military targets, the ministry said, adding that such deployments "reset to zero" conditions for constructive dialogue.
- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters the military build-up "cannot but be perceived as a threat to Russia's security," while a pro-Russian hacker group called Server Killers declared "cyberwar" on Norway.
- Separately, the Kremlin criticized Norway's plans to expand its Finnmark brigade in the Arctic, while the Foreign Ministry called U.S. proposals for multilateral negotiations involving China "unrealistic.
