Russia says Ukraine hit two facilities at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Rosatom said a food delivery driver was killed and two plant facilities were struck, while officials said there was no threat to nuclear safety.

  • On Monday, Ukrainian drones struck two facilities at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, killing a food delivery driver. Alexei Likhachev, director general of Rosatom, confirmed the targets included a laboratory and radioactive waste processing plant, reporting no nuclear safety threat.
  • Russia seized the plant, Europe's largest facility with six reactors, during its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Moscow and Kyiv have since regularly accused each other of military actions compromising nuclear safety at the site.
  • On Saturday, plant management reported that Ukrainian shelling damaged external power supply equipment over recent weeks. The facility requires power to keep nuclear fuel cool and currently operates on emergency diesel generators.
  • Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Western countries of enabling these attacks by failing to condemn them. She wrote that the West is "effectively facilitating new attacks" through lack of appropriate response.
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly attempted to secure a ceasefire to repair power lines connecting the plant to the main grid. Monitors remain stationed at Zaporizhzhia and three other operating plants in Ukraine.
