Russia builds major new drone attack base in six weeks, satellite images show
Satellite imagery shows eight launcher pads and 32 drone-prep spots, as analysts say the site could speed up Russia’s jet-drone attacks on Ukraine.
- On Tuesday, October 13, the Ukrainian OSINT channel Absolutely Reliable Source reported that Russia nearly finished a new launch site for jet-powered Geran-5 drones near Millerovo, Rostov Oblast.
- Satellite imagery indicates construction took about six weeks, as the area appeared empty on September 1. The facility's layout closely resembles Russia's existing jet-drone base in Oryol Oblast, Tsymbulova.
- The new base includes eight prepared launcher positions and 32 spots for preparing UAVs for launch. Imagery from October 12 shows drones already being unloaded in zone 3.
- Designed to scale up attacks after September strikes on Kyiv, the site supports jet-powered drones that are harder to intercept. Ukraine downs 55% of these compared to more than 90% of older propeller-driven Shaheds.
- Russia's industry produces about 3,000 Geran-4 and other drones monthly, though analysts note such facilities are difficult to strike with conventional kamikaze drones. The construction signals expanded strike capability.
