Russell Says Poor Season Will Not Define His F1 Career
Russell said a difficult 2026 season will not define his career and vowed to rediscover his form after Antonelli clinched the title.
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured the F1 world championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the sport's youngest-ever title winner at 20 years old, while teammate George Russell finished sixth.
Russell entered the 2026 season as the pre-season title favorite, but a series of technical failures and inconsistent performances left him trailing Antonelli, ultimately ending his championship aspirations with four rounds remaining.
During the Mexico City race, an "unexpected lack of deployment" cost Russell positions before a 10-second penalty for colliding with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar; Mercedes faced a €5,000 FIA fine for his missed media duties.
Team principal Toto Wolff defended Russell, describing him as "distraught" following the race and admitting Mercedes "let him down" by failing to deliver necessary power unit performance on the opening straight.
Vowing to "rediscover the performance" he has produced throughout his career, Russell aims to regain form for the remainder of this season and next year, starting at the upcoming race in Brazil.
