Russell Brand's producer 'stepping back' from TV roles : News 2026 : Chortle : The UK Comedy Guide
The jury reached its verdict after eight and a half hours of deliberation, court documents show, leaving the 51-year-old defendant facing a mandatory prison sentence.
On Thursday, a jury at Southwark Crown Court found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was cleared of two further charges of rape and one allegation of attempted indecent assault.
Six women provided evidence against Brand during the trial, while the former comedian, who was once married to Katy Perry, failed to secure testimony from any celebrity friends or former showbiz colleagues in his defence.
The court heard testimony that in 2009, Jack Bayles and Gareth Roy forced a young female staffer to give him a massage, with the manager stating the men "were both there the whole time and watched and laughed while Mr Brand sexually assaulted her right in front of them."
Following the trial, Bayles, head of comedy at Various Artists Limited, will no longer work on the BBC sitcoms Such Brave Girls and Push. His departure affects the company's comedy slate development.
Brand's sentencing hearing takes place on Monday, while Bayles told Deadline he is "appalled and sickened by Brand's actions" and has not had contact with him since 2010. The conviction carries implications for showbiz workplace accountability.
