U.S. Told Venezuelan Authorities that Opposition Leader Machado Should Be Allowed to Return
Rubio said the United States wants a credible election framework as Venezuela and opposition figures agree on reforms for a 2027 vote.
On Sunday, opposition leader María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration told interim authorities "weeks and weeks ago" she "should be allowed to return unperturbed."
Machado spent most of 2025 in hiding before escaping to Norway, where she received the Nobel Peace Prize and later presented the medal to President Donald Trump.
The Trump administration captured President Nicolás Maduro in January, installing acting President Delcy Rodríguez, who has remained in power beyond her authorized term with no election scheduled.
Venezuelan authorities agreed last week on a blueprint to reform the electoral process, aiming to facilitate "free and fair elections" in 2027.
Rubio stated the U.S. aims to help build sustainable election architecture, including institutional reforms and press freedom, while monitoring compliance through diplomatic leverage with interim authorities.
