RSPB warning over huge 80 per cent decline in two of Britain's most loved bird types
The charity said starlings have fallen 85.1% since 1979, while greenfinches remain around two-thirds below 1979 levels.
- The RSPB issued a warning after the Big Garden Birdwatch revealed steep population declines for starlings and greenfinches, with more than 650,000 people participating in the survey.
- Greenfinches face devastation from trichomonosis, a disease spreading at feeders, while starling numbers have plummeted 85.1% since 1979, placing both on the conservation "red list."
- Other UK-wide surveys indicate a loss of more than two million greenfinches since the mid-1990s, and their population remains roughly two-thirds down on 1979 levels.
- Beccy Speight, the charity's chief executive, urged households to adjust feeding habits, stating: "We're not asking people to stop feeding, just to feed in a way that protects birds' long-term health."
- Experts recommend cleaning feeders weekly and limiting food during summer months to curb disease transmission among birds. "By making small changes together, we can ensure garden feeding continues to be a positive force for nature," the organization stated.
