Roseau River WMA dike opens for wildlife viewing

The openings will let visitors drive the interior road for wildlife viewing and fishing while the area remains closed most of the year to protect wildlife.

  • Starting today, July 18, the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area opens its 27-mile dike road for vehicular traffic, offering rare motorized access through late July and early August.
  • Area wildlife supervisor Tom Enright explained that the dike system, dating to about 1953, was "not built to modern road standards" and remains restricted most of the year for public safety.
  • Northern pike are the most typical catch for visitors who fish below spillway structures; Enright noted that current water levels are lower due to dry conditions but fishing remains decent.
  • The dike opens July 18-26, with additional access August 1-2 and August 8-9, drawing birders and hunters from the Twin Cities and beyond to explore otherwise restricted interior territory.
  • Outside these periodic openings, maintenance staff use the dike road for habitat management, and Enright emphasized that limited vehicle access ultimately fosters greater wildlife production in the North Star State.
