McIlroy, Back in PGA Hunt, Blames Bad Setup for Lead Logjam
McIlroy’s 67 left him five shots off the lead and kept his bid for back-to-back major titles alive after a difficult opening round.
On Friday, six-time major champion Rory McIlroy fired a three-under-par 67 at Aronimink Golf Club, advancing to five shots off the lead at the US PGA Championship.
After a four-over 74 on Thursday when he closed with four bogeys in a row, McIlroy spent hours on the driving range to correct his swing before Friday's turnaround.
World number one Scottie Scheffler called the pin placements "absurd," while McIlroy criticized the setup for preventing separation, with 15 players within two shots of the lead at halfway.
Americans Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy share the lead entering Saturday, while two-time PGA champion Pádraig Harrington posted a 69 to position himself for the weekend.
McIlroy feels "right in the tournament" heading into the weekend, though he expects a difficult challenge on a course where the bunched leaderboard signals a tight competition ahead.
