Avila to Return to SLU, Play Time for Mizzou Uncertain
A judge took the case under advisement as a temporary restraining order stays in place and Avila’s availability for SLU’s next game remains uncertain.
On Thursday, St. Louis City Circuit Court Judge Jason Sengheiser granted a preliminary injunction allowing Saint Louis University center Robbie Avila to play a fifth year of college basketball for the 2026-27 season.
Avila filed a lawsuit in September challenging an NCAA eligibility decision tied to a 2022 rule limiting athletes' extra playing time; Judge Sengheiser ruled denying eligibility would cause irreparable harm.
Testifying Wednesday, Avila confirmed he never signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, only verbally agreeing to terms despite appearing in two summer league games.
SLU head coach Josh Schertz confirmed Avila will dress for Friday's game against the Missouri Tigers at Enterprise Center, though conditioning remains limited after minimal practice time.
The preliminary injunction remains effective until trial, which could occur several months away, reflecting broader legal uncertainty as similar NCAA eligibility lawsuits by athletes nationwide remain pending.
