Ranked among the greatest contemporary European writers, his work explored the traumas of the 20th century while remaining critical of current politics. The novelist and essayist died at his home on Wednesday 26 August.
Péter Nádas, one of the greatest contemporary Hungarian writers, has died at the age of 83. He was repeatedly mentioned as a possible candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which was last won by his compatriot László Krasznahorkai. Nádas came to Prague in 2003 to receive the Franz Kafka Prize. Several of his books have been published in Czech.
