Man Dies in Paramotor Crash at Mass. Airport
Authorities said the damaged paramotor leaked fuel and had a broken propeller as investigators examine the crash that killed a 63-year-old pilot.
- On Sunday, Gary Williams, 63, of Cranston, Rhode Island, died after his paramotor crashed at Myricks Airport in Berkley, Massachusetts, shortly before 9:40 a.m.
- Williams was attempting to land his powered glider at the rural grass runway on Padelford Street when the aircraft went down, prompting a 911 call from a witness.
- Police and EMS found a "large divot" in the field and located Williams 15 to 20 feet away suffering life-threatening injuries, while neighbor Darcy Lee reported hearing the engine sputtering.
- Williams was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The paramotor's propeller was broken in "multiple locations" and leaked fuel, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III.
- Myricks Airport operates as a large open field where single-engine aircraft, paragliders, and paramotor fliers can take off and land from a grass runway. Massachusetts State Police and the Berkley Police Department are investigating.
