Gov. Reynolds Signs Executive Order Establishing Office of Outdoor Recreation
The office will operate under the Iowa Tourism Office and a task force will deliver recommendations within 120 days.
On Monday, Governor Kim Reynolds signed an executive order at Lake Ahquabi State Park establishing the Iowa Office of Outdoor Recreation to boost state tourism and economic growth.
Outdoor recreation contributes nearly $6 billion annually to Iowa's economy and supports nearly 50,000 jobs across the state's 99 counties, Reynolds said, calling it a "major economic force."
As the 25th state to establish such an office, Iowa will operate it under the Iowa Tourism Office and the Iowa Economic Development Authority; a task force must submit recommendations within 120 days.
Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon announced the 2026 Iowa State Park Passport alongside the new office, promoting roughly 70 state parks and expanding partnerships with private businesses like Winnebago.
The initiative seeks to support, enhance, and expand Iowa's outdoor recreation sector while ensuring responsible stewardship of natural landscapes for future generations, fostering collaboration between public agencies and private industry.
