Rewriting the rules for men’s mental health
Talkspace says nearly 1 in 10 men face depression or anxiety, and it is urging friends and family to start supportive conversations.
Ahead of Men's Health Month in November, Talkspace launched a campaign challenging men to "rewrite the rules" surrounding mental health and seek professional support.
Nearly 1 in 10 men in the United States experience depression or anxiety, yet less than half receive treatment, highlighting a significant care gap.
A study of 716 people found men were 29% less likely than women to attend therapy; those viewing themselves as more masculine reported fewer mental health symptoms.
Talkspace therapist H. Jay Swedlaw, MS/EdS, LPC, LMHC, noted that societal expectations create pressure on men, while therapy helps incorporate emotional expression and vulnerability.
Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women; Talkspace encourages direct check-ins, suggesting friends ask questions to help men discuss their feelings.
