Rescuers call in Royal Marines after reindeer escapes Christmas event
Emergency services, including Royal Marines and coastguards, tracked and safely sedated Buddy the reindeer after an eight-hour escape from a Formby Christmas event.
- On Saturday, Buddy, a reindeer from Santa's Enchanted Forest in Formby, bolted from a Christmas event, prompting Merseyside Police, HM Coastguard Southport, HM Coastguard Crosby, Southport Lifeboat, and Royal Marines to respond.
- The trust received a call at around 4.45pm and, fearing the reindeer might enter the River Mersey, called in Southport quad teams and HM Coastguard Southport and Crosby.
- Using thermal binoculars, the Southport quad team located the reindeer on Formby Beach and used quad bikes to shepherd it into sand dunes at Altcar Rifle Range while a police drone maintained an overhead watch.
- After it rested in the dunes, a vet from Salisbury, supported by Royal Marines, sedated Buddy around 1.20am on Sunday and loaded it into a trailer for return to its owners in Wales.
- Residents and officials praised the agencies involved, with Southport Lifeboat adding: `Christmas is saved thanks to some great work from multiple agencies,` and social media comments like `This would make a great storyline for a Christmas movie.
