Rescue crews save six in water on busy Christmas Day
- On Thursday, Victoria Police and rescue crews saved six people across separate incidents in Port Phillip Bay, the Bass Coast and Paynesville.
- Strong winds and currents including south-westerly winds up to 35 knots swept paddlers offshore, and authorities warned conditions can change quickly near the Portarlington caravan park launch area.
- The 51-year-old woman and her 17-year-old stepson launched from Portarlington caravan park jetty about 3pm and were spotted by police air wing near Wyndham Harbour about 6.20pm, more than 10km out, before water police rescued them.
- Paramedics said the pair showed mild hypothermia but did not require hospitalisation, and the family of the rescued pair thanked rescuers on Boxing Day.
- Police and volunteer crews coordinated using police helicopters, water police boats, the Queenscliff volunteer coastguard, and rescue helicopters, with Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Quirk saying, `The search area was quite large given the time frames and the distance someone could move in those sorts of conditions`.
