Celebrated Urdu Poet Bashir Badr Dies at 91 in Bhopal
The Padma Shri awardee and former Aligarh Muslim University teacher was remembered for ghazals that made Urdu poetry widely accessible.
On Thursday, renowned Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Bashir Badr passed away in Bhopal at 91 following a prolonged illness, leaving millions of admirers mourning the loss of a beloved literary voice.
Born in Ayodhya in 1935, Badr studied and later taught Urdu at Aligarh Muslim University, earning immense respect for his simple, emotional ghazals that made the language accessible to a wider audience.
During the 1987 communal riots in Meerut, arsonists torched his home, destroying priceless unpublished manuscripts and writings, which prompted his permanent relocation to Bhopal.
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar expressed grief on X, writing, "Today, our language Urdu has become a little poorer. Bashir Badr, an extremely melodious poet, has departed from our gathering forever."
Badr is survived by his wife and two children, with family members confirming his last rites will be held later this evening in Bhopal to honor the late literary figure.
