Regulators OK 85-megawatt solar project at Boswell
The $163.5 million project will generate 85 megawatts of solar power to supply about 19,500 homes and supports Minnesota Power’s goal of 300 MW solar capacity by 2027.
- On Thursday, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved a site permit for Minnesota Power's $163.5 million, 85-megawatt solar project adjacent to Boswell Energy Center in Cohasset, Minnesota, which regulators said could power up to 19,500 homes.
- As part of its integrated resource plan from 2022, the Boswell and Royalton projects account for more than two-thirds of the 300 megawatts Minnesota Power announced under the 2022 agreement with clean-energy organizations.
- The site plan includes a new substation and a nearly 3-mile, 230-kilovolt transmission line, with work beginning this spring, Ryan said.
- Between 50% and 60% of Minnesota Power's energy now comes from renewable sources, and the solar project or natural gas refueling proposal could preserve Cohasset and Itasca County tax revenue as Boswell coal units retire.
- Paired with Royalton, the Boswell project positions the company for larger solar output as nearly 100 megawatts will come through a distributed solar energy standard.
