Cincinnati Reds Hire Joe Torres as Pitching Coach
Torres joins Cincinnati after five seasons in Cleveland, where the Guardians ranked among MLB’s top 10 in ERA and won four division titles.
The Cincinnati Reds hired Joe Torres as their new pitching coach on Wednesday, replacing Derek Johnson. Torres, 44, previously served as assistant pitching coach for the Cleveland Guardians for five seasons.
Following a last-place finish in the National League Central with a 75-87 record, the front office pursued coaching changes. Nick Krall targeted improvements after the team surrendered 68 more walks and hit-by-pitches than the next-closest club.
Torres previously worked under Reds manager Terry Francona in Cleveland during 2022 and 23. During his five seasons on the Guardians' staff, Cleveland finished in MLB's top 10 in ERA each year and won four American League Central division titles.
Inheriting a staff including Chase Burns, Torres plans to prioritize "throwing strike one" to address control issues. He emphasized establishing organizational connections and fostering a cohesive player development approach.
Cleveland's pitching infrastructure flourished during Torres's tenure, with the organization developing more young pitchers with a career WAR of 1+ than any team between 2022 and 2026. Cincinnati aims to replicate that success.
