Red Bull’s Max Verstappen wins first-ever sprint race at F1 Singapore Grand Prix
Verstappen led a Red Bull 1-2 charge in the wet sprint while Russell crashed out on lap one after briefly taking the lead.
- George Russell crashed out of the lead during Saturday's Singapore Grand Prix sprint race after a 30-minute weather delay. Russell had overtaken Max Verstappen at the start but lost control on the second lap.
- Tricky damp conditions caused the crash as Russell touched the slippery white painted lines while cornering. The incident immediately triggered a Safety Car, allowing following drivers to safely avoid the spinning Mercedes.
- Russell told Sky Sports the crash was a "Miscalculation" involving unexpected battery deployment that pushed him wider than expected. The 28-year-old Briton confirmed on Mercedes team radio he was unhurt after the impact.
- Failing to score points marks a significant blow to Russell's fading championship hopes. Teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who held an 84-point lead entering the weekend, now stands to extend his advantage.
- Facing engine penalties from an earlier power unit failure, the driver will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid. He looks set to face further difficulties at Austin's U.S. Grand Prix.
