Batherson Nets Hat Trick as Senators Sink Rangers 7-4
Batherson added an assist, and Ottawa converted two empty-net chances after the Rangers pulled within one late.
On Saturday night at the Canadian Tire Centre, the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Rangers 7-4, with Drake Batherson recording three goals to secure his third National Hockey League hat-trick.
Scoring twice in a span of 66 seconds, the Senators established an early 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Batherson and Tim Stutzle.
Goaltender Jonas Johansson, making his debut, stopped 23 of 27 shots; however, defensive lapses allowed New York to pull within a goal during the second period.
Jake Sanderson's first goal of the season midway through the third period proved to be the winner, extending Ottawa's lead to 5-3 and withstanding New York's late rally.
The Rangers travel to face the Los Angeles Kings on Monday at Madison Square Garden, while the Senators visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.
