Bissell Recalls 1.7 Million Steam Cleaners for Burn Risks

Bissell has received 206 burn reports, including 161 injuries, after attachments on the recalled cleaners could detach and spray hot water or steam.

  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 1.7 million Bissell Steam Shot OmniReach and Steam Shot Omni Steam Cleaners over burn hazards. The notice states attachments "can unexpectedly detach from the steam cleaners and expel hot water or steam onto users during use, posing a serious burn hazard."
  • Bissell has received 206 reports of hot water or steam unexpectedly escaping from attachments, including 161 reports of burn injuries and one second-degree burn incident.
  • Impacted model numbers include 4155 and 4171, sold at Target, Walmart, and other retailers from October 2024 through March 2026 for between $9 and $55. Owners should contact Bissell for replacement attachments.
  • Consumer watchdog Teresa Murray of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group noted that recall processes can take months or years. Murray recommends making safety checks a regular part of household routines.
  • The 2019 Fisher Price sleeper recall, which followed more than 30 infant deaths, illustrates the ongoing necessity of regulatory oversight for household products. Such precedents underscore patterns in delayed consumer safety responses.
