Reach to close GalwayBeo website as part of broader cuts
On Wednesday, Reach announced the closure of three news titles—AberdeenLive, KentLive, and GalwayBeo—cutting 220 editorial roles while creating around 60 new positions, resulting in a net loss of 160 jobs.
Chief content officer David Higgerson cited weak 'market position' in those areas, noting Reach faces declining Google search referral traffic and BBC competition that mirrors its output up to 70% of the time.
Higgerson described the firm as being in "the middle of a mammoth shift in how audiences want content and journalism," with "active engaged time" becoming the company's north star metric by year-end.
The firm will "look for opportunities to redeploy colleagues, reducing the need for compulsory redundancies," while Higgerson noted leadership cut non-people budgets to "protect as many jobs as possible."
This move follows a major restructure last September when Reach cut more than 320 jobs, as half-yearly results show overall revenues down 9% and digital revenues down 11.4%.
