Rare Royal Mint 50 coin sells for more than 230 times face value on eBay
The coin drew 13 bids after the Royal Mint said its 2009 mintage was 210,000, making it one of the rarest 50p issues.
A 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin sold for £117 in an online eBay auction on November 1, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Released by The Royal Mint in 2009, the design had a circulating mintage of 210,000; The Mint says low demand for 50p coins that year contributed to the unusually small number struck.
The Mint ranks the 2009 Kew Gardens edition as the second rarest 50p, behind the 2023 Atlantic Salmon, which holds the title as the rarest design in circulation.
Rarity and collector demand affect a coin's market price; Sellers can obtain professional valuations, though such assessments do not guarantee the final sale price realized.
Collectors can check loose change for these scarce editions, noting the reverse depicts the Chinese pagoda while the obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
