Betis Cup Game Among Fixtures Postponed After Train Crash
The federation said it will announce new dates soon after the crash killed at least 64 people and disrupted rail travel for teams and fans.
On Wednesday, the Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for that evening as a mark of respect following a fatal train crash in Toledo, Spain.
A high-speed train collided with another in the province of Toledo on Wednesday morning, derailing two cars; Spanish news agency EFE reported at least 64 people have been killed.
Seville-Based Real Betis was set to begin its domestic cup campaign Wednesday, with the postponement affecting the opening-round fixture for Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott alongside clubs like Alaves and Valencia.
Major Spanish clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid issued statements expressing deepest condolences, while the RFEF stated it suspended play "as a sign of respect and solidarity with all the victims."
The RFEF will announce revised tournament scheduling in the coming days, though teams including Girona, Elche, and Malaga secured second-round spots on Tuesday, with Espanyol losing 4-3 at Sestao River.
The duel before the modest Navalcarnero was scheduled for Wednesday, but was rescheduled just like the rest of the date after the serious railway accident in Toledo.
