Dozens feared dead after two high-speed trains collide in Spain
A collision between two high-speed trains near Toledo, Spain, resulted in dozens of deaths shortly after 9 a.m., with rail operator Adif describing the incident as a "rear-end collision" involving Renfe and Iryo trains.
More than 500 passengers were aboard the trains when they crashed between Los Yebenes and Urda, where local reports indicate two carriages overturned after rolling down an embankment.
This incident follows a January crash in Adamuz that killed 46 people and injured 152, plus a separate derailment near Gelida where a driver was killed and 37 people injured.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro expressed being "Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo," while the government coordinated with regional administrations in Castilla-La Mancha to assist victims.
Following previous rail tragedies, Spain's largest train drivers' union called for a three-day nationwide strike demanding more thorough safety checks and restoration of railway safety standards.
"At least ten people" died on Wednesday in the collision of two high-speed trains about 150 kilometres south of Madrid, said the regional authorities, warning that the number of victims could still increase.
