The British government has now confirmed that it wants to levy a new mileage tax on electric cars and plug-in hybrids from 2028. The aim is reportedly to raise more money for road repairs after the rise of electric cars has reduced revenue from fuel excise duty. Critics say the additional cost of the tax, which is set to be three pence per mile for electric and hydrogen cars and 1.5 pence for hybrids, will slow the transition to electric cars.

In the future, a fee per mile will be charged in the UK to adequately involve e-car drivers in infrastructure costs.
