Queen Camilla celebrates 79th birthday with book giveaway for children
The National Literacy Trust programme will give every Year 6 and P6 child a special edition of Impossible Creatures with a royal message and free resources.
On her 79th birthday today, Buckingham Palace released an official portrait of Queen Camilla taken last month by Getty royal photographer Chris Jackson in the State Drawing Room of Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland.
Despite approaching 80, Queen Camilla has maintained an exceptionally active schedule throughout 2026, from attending Trooping the Colour and the Epsom Derby in June to a four-day state visit to the U.S. in April with King Charles.
In the portrait, Camilla wears a diamond and sapphire butterfly brooch once presented to late Queen Elizabeth II in 1977; earlier this month she reunited with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children Archie and Lilibet for the first time since 2022.
Prince William and Kate led birthday wishes on Friday, writing 'Wishing Her Majesty the Queen a very happy birthday!' as Camilla announced every Year 6 and P6 child across the UK will receive a personalized copy of 'Impossible Creatures' by Katherine Rundell this Christmas.
The initiative reflects Camilla's lifelong reading passion; she founded her Reading Room book club during Covid-19 lockdown in January 2021, which became a registered charity hosting annual literary festivals and podcasts, and serves as Patron of the National Literacy Trust, BookTrust, and CoramBeanstalk.
