Lightning Sparked Dozens of Wildfires in Quebec in July
SOPFEU said lightning caused 41% of July fires, while more than 220 firefighters from other provinces and the United States helped contain them.
- Quebec's wildfire agency SOPFEU reported "above-average" fire activity last month in a report published Thursday, with 90 wildfires affecting 1,675 hectares, largely driven by lightning strikes.
- Exceptional atmospheric instability produced 243,363 lightning strikes over the past month across Quebec, nearly three times the seven-year average, while above-normal temperatures and precipitation deficits in western Quebec and the North Shore compounded conditions.
- Lightning caused 41 per cent of the 90 wildfires in the intensive protection zone, while 45 lightning-caused fires in Northern Quebec alone burned 16,099 hectares during July.
- SOPFEU received assistance from more than 220 wildland firefighters from Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and the United States to combat the blazes.
- With the situation "under control" by month's end, SOPFEU deployed teams to British Columbia, which is grappling with numerous active wildfires, reciprocating earlier assistance.
