Quarterbacks Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin Teaming up to Power Utah's Offense Again
Utah plans to feature both quarterbacks again as it tries to build on last season’s Big 12-leading offense, with 66% of total yardage coming from the duo.
Utah will utilize a two-quarterback system for the second straight season, with Devon Dampier as the starter and Byrd Ficklin as backup. Head coach Morgan Scalley confirmed both players will see significant snaps.
First-Year offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven plans to continue the dual-quarterback approach established in 2025 by his predecessor Jason Beck. McGiven's scheme aims to maintain Utah's top-four national ranking in total, rushing, and scoring offense.
Last season, Dampier threw for 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns despite a sports hernia, while the pair combined to produce 66% of Utah's total yardage and 39% of rushing yardage. Both players contributed significantly to the Utes' offensive dominance.
Both players embrace their competitive roles under McGiven's guidance, pushing each other to become elite decision-makers. Ficklin focuses on reading progressions while Dampier credits their shared room as a catalyst for his own growth.
Ficklin, in line to start as soon as 2027, rejected the option to transfer elsewhere this offseason. He remains committed to developing as a complete dual-threat quarterback within McGiven's movement-heavy offensive system.
