Verstappen and Ferrari Pair Incur Grid Penalties for Brazil GP

Verstappen led a tight session as power unit changes are expected to send him and several rivals to the back of the grid.

  • On Saturday, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen topped the final practice session in Sao Paulo, though he will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid due to a new power unit.
  • New champion Kimi Antonelli was second fastest, just two tenths of a second behind the Dutchman, while Lando Norris and George Russell finished third and fourth respectively.
  • Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also took grid penalties for new power units, leaving Leclerc fifth and Hamilton 12th in the practice standings.
  • Mercedes holds a 126-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors' championship and must outscore them by at least three points this weekend to secure the title.
  • Eyeing likely wet weather, Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff quipped, "It should be a great race – almost like a reverse grid race!" suggesting qualifying conditions could reshape the grid.
