A mudslide struck the Kidong checkpoint on the China-Nepal border. Multiple warnings may have existed prior to the disaster, including a 2014 geological hazard assessment, studies indicating a glacial lake outburst risk, and a 2025 bridge collapse forecast. The decision to reopen customs is being put to the test.
