Putin says Russia will bolster its air defenses in response to Ukrainian drone attacks
Putin said Russia must improve its air-defense systems after Ukrainian drone attacks damaged infrastructure and reached deep inside the country, officials said.
On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin announced Russia will strengthen its air defenses to counter recent Ukrainian drone attacks that have reached deep inside his country, including strikes on St. Petersburg.
Hours before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum opened Wednesday, a Ukrainian drone attack set ablaze an oil terminal and struck the Kronstadt naval base, sending massive plumes of black smoke above the city.
Putin said Russia's use of the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile allowed testing of precision capabilities before targeting residential areas. Moscow also faces vulnerability from drone strikes on its suburbs.
Delegations from Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, and China are attending the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, as Russia seeks to promote a "multipolar world" amid worsening economic outlooks and budget pressures.
Putin remains open to compromise on Ukraine citing understandings from his summit with President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, but dismissed European Union countries as mediators, arguing they are not neutral parties.
